The company sources its oranges from all over the world and tracks which farms produce oranges that meet its standards at different times of the year, sometimes down to specific weeks.

It uses data analytics to decide how many oranges to procure from where and when, depending on the time of the year. How the machines are refilled is also dynamic – drivers receive instructions on the exact quantity of oranges to replenish and the most efficient routes between machines.

The demand for natural sugar replacements has never been higher. With global sugar reduction mandates intensifying and consumer preferences shifting toward healthier, sustainable options, the beverage industry is under increasing pressure to adapt. However, consumers are not asking for radical change—they want the flavors and experiences they already know, enhanced by better ingredients.

In 2023, 2.7 billion packages were deposited and returned to the recycling loop, corresponding to a deposit rate of 88.5 percent. The numbers for 2024 are currently processed and are expected to be even higher. The objective for the Swedish DRS is to remain stable above 90 percent, which brings substantial environmental benefits. In 2023, the DRS in Sweden saved 180,000 tons of carbon dioxide, equivalent to a full year’s emissions from a medium-sized Swedish city. The DRS also saves energy and helps to ensure that virgin raw materials, such as oil and bauxite, remain untouched in the ground.

The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it’s banning the use of Red No. 3, a synthetic dye that gives food and drinks their bright red cherry color but has been linked to cancer in animals.

The dye is still used in thousands of foods, including candy, cereals, cherries in fruit cocktails and strawberry-flavored milkshakes, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a food safety advocacy group that petitioned the agency in 2022 to end its use. More than 9,200 food items contain the dye, including hundreds of products made by large food companies.

This situation has also affected multinational companies such as Coca-Cola, which purchases most of its lemon concentrates for global distribution from northwest Argentina. The shortage has caused a notable increase in lemon prices, which rose from $1,500 a kilo in October to $3,000 in November, reaching $5,000 in January 2025.

CitrusBR executive director Ibiapaba Netto noted that lower exports from Brazil also come amid a scenario of lower consumption. "The sector faces five cycles of small and medium crops and, according to international references, an unprecedented price rise that shows that demand decline is inevitable," Netto said in a statement.

The revenue from Brazil's orange juice exports rose 42.7% from July to December, to $1.88 billion, amid higher international prices, government data compiled by CitrusBR showed. Europe has kept its place as the top buyer of Brazil's orange juice in the period, representing 42.7% of the total shipped amount.

Trademarked as “Sumo Citrus” in the U.S., shiranui oranges are a hybrid of three varieties: mandarin oranges, satsumas, and navel oranges. In Japan, where they were originally cultivated, they are called dekopon, which roughly translates to “uneven.”

These large fruits, slightly smaller than grapefruit, have wrinkled skin that is easy to peel and an incredibly sweet flavor compared to other citrus. They can register up to 18° Brix on the sweetness scale, compared to 12 for satsumas.

UV-LED technology shows potential for enzyme inactivation in tomato juice; that is, it could potentially lead to the development of similar food matrixes. However, future research should explore other processing conditions.

Citrus aurantium, also known as bitter orange, and the by-products obtained during its processing are a rich source of bioactive compounds. In particular, leaves from the tree pruning and from fruits harvesting are considered an agrifood-related waste with high valorization potential. Considering the wide variety of bioactive compounds present in the leaves (carotenoids, terpenes and phenolic compounds), this study is focused on the valorization of C. aurantium pruning waste through a sequential three-step extraction process using green extraction techniques, i.e. supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), followed by pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) using natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES), and an antisolvent extraction to recover the remaining bioactive compounds adsorbed to the NaDES and extraction residues.
