Although juice and juice drinks still are sought after for their nutritional benefits, experts note that sugar reduction trends have significantly impacted the market.

“When it comes to sugar, many juice brands face a common hurdle: consumers’ growing skepticism over added sugars in juice products. This confusion has led consumers to question almost any juice product, leading some to even question 100% fruit juices that contain no added sugars.”

Apothékary continues its expansion in the wellness space, securing additional funding for its Series A round from global Japanese beauty brand Shiseido and launching on Ulta.com as the retailer’s first alcohol alternative product.

Shiseido’s investment grew the round to $8 million, exceeding the original target amount by 40%, according to Apothékary. The brand offers functional tinctures and powders made with plant-based ingredients that support skin, digestion, cognition and sleep and energy, in addition to non-alcoholic products.

🍊 Citrus News

Minister for Agriculture & Livestock Punjab Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani on Wednesday said that a mega programme worth Rs1.2 billion was being implemented to promote citrus production and exports.

He said Pakistan earned approximately USD 185 million annually through citrus exports, which could be significantly increased. The Punjab government was taking various initiatives to restore and enhance citrus production in the province, he added.

In Brazil, citriculture is expanding into new regions such as the Triângulo Mineiro, the northwest of São Paulo state, and Mato Grosso do Sul. This shift highlights the importance of maintaining effective control of the psyllid responsible for citrus greening (HLB) and eliminating diseased plants.

To address this, Fundecitrus began testing insecticides in these areas and observed promising results in the initial evaluations, even with some products to which the psyllid is resistant.

Fundecitrus researcher Marcelo Miranda described the findings as highly encouraging.

🔬 Research Worth Reading

Researchers around the world are working to cure and mitigate the effects of HLB while U.S. states with commercial citrus production do their best to control spread of the disease. Any further spread of HLB could reduce supply of US domestic as well as foreign-grown citrus fruit while any cure could increase supply. It is currently unknown what the future holds. As such, in this study, we estimate a QUAIDS model for U.S. household fruit demand to provide the information needed to understand households’ likely responses to future fruit price changes as well as the tools needed to calculate how their welfare might be affected.

Boron (B) is an essential element for an adequate development of citrus orchards. However, citrus trees are vulnerable to high B concentrations, generating morphological and physiological alterations incompatible with the proper production of citrus. In this sense, citrus rootstocks can provide valuable capabilities to citrus trees including tolerance to different stresses.

Results demonstrate the potential of FOP sugar warning labels for addressing beverage consumption behaviours. The incorporation of sweetener warning labels may successfully avoid substitution towards NSSBs, whilst still promoting water choices, but may also dilute the impact of the sugary drinks warning labels. Warning labels were complementary to existing interpretive FOP labels.
