The mango, that beloved linchpin of cuisines and cultures around the world, typifies this trend. This juicy, flavorful fruit, which outsells most of its tropical counterparts, is grown in some 120 countries. But many leading producers face higher temperatures, greater aridity, and other challenges to raising a crop that requires very specific conditions to thrive. As it grows more popular — global production is expected to reach 65 million metric tons next year — production is beginning to shift to new areas, making the mango a fitting emblem of yet another way climate change is reshaping global agriculture.

Starting February 1, 2025, Molson Coors will assume exclusive commercialization rights to Fever-Tree’s award-winning lineup of tonics, ginger beers, cocktail mixers and more in the U.S. and will be responsible for co-manufactured production, marketing, sales and distribution of the brand in the U.S. The move is a significant step forward in Molson Coors’ strategic ambition to build a total-beverage portfolio for a wide range of consumer preferences across traditional alcohol occasions and non-alc occasions alike.

“The Celsius brand has long been synonymous with fitness and favored by consumers who prefer zero-sugar, refreshing energy drinks,” said Celsius chief marketing officer Kyle Watson. “Celsius Hydration is the perfect complement to our portfolio of functional beverages and gives consumers more occasions to enjoy the great-tasting and refreshing beverage experience that has propelled Celsius to become the number-three energy drink brand in the United States.”

Symrise AG, a leading global supplier of fragrances and flavors, cosmetic and active ingredients as well as functional products, continued to significantly increase its sales and earnings growth in the 2024 financial year despite challenging economic conditions. Symrise confirms its mid-term growth and profitability targets until 2028.

A new class action lawsuit alleges Kraft Heinz falsely advertises that its Capri-Sun juice pouches contain all natural ingredients.

Plaintiff Alyssa Flexer claims in the Jan. 24 lawsuit that the Capri-Sun juice pouches contain citric acid, a synthetic ingredient, despite Kraft Heinz’s advertising of all natural ingredients.

🍊 Citrus News

Global citrus production for 2023/24 shows varied trends across different categories. Tangerine/mandarin production is estimated to increase by 1.2 million tons to 38.2 million tons, with significant growth in China and Turkey due to favorable weather conditions and higher yields. Orange production is projected to rise 1% to 47.4 million tons, with increases in Egypt, the United States, and Turkey offsetting declines in Brazil and the European Union. However, orange juice production is expected to decrease by 3% to 1.5 million tons due to reduced fruit availability for processing in Brazil.

The market dynamics show notable regional shifts, with Turkey's mandarin production reaching a record 2.9 million tons, up 55% from the previous year. China maintains its position as the largest producer of both oranges and mandarins, with production reaching 7.6 million tons and 26.9 million tons respectively. The European Union faces challenges with production declines across multiple citrus categories due to unfavorable weather conditions, while South Africa continues to show strong growth in both orange and mandarin production. Global grapefruit production is slightly up at 6.9 million tons, and lemons/limes production has increased by 2% to 10.1 million tons.

The two dams are considered important reservoirs of water for farmers in the San Joaquin Valley, which is known for its "Citrus Belt" that produced more than four million tons of citrus fruits — particularly Mandarin, Navel and Valencia oranges, along with grapefruits and lemons — in the 2020-2021 season alone. Tulare County water manager Dan Vink said the release of water from the dams could make irrigation difficult.

"A decision to take summer water from local farmers and dump it out of these reservoirs shows a complete lack of understanding of how the system works and sets a very dangerous precedent," Vink said. "This decision was clearly made by someone with no understanding of the system or the impacts that come from knee-jerk political actions."

"Everything is changing very rapidly in Egypt, where projects enjoy strong government and financial support, and benefit from very low labor costs and a sufficient water supply (a key resource). Parallel to agricultural developments, there are also investments in processing plants. Egypt is bound to become a player in the juice market, especially orange juice, and we will have to monitor its development."

The syntenic R-gene based phylogenic classification grouped the five species according to their HLB-resistance levels, reflecting the association between these R-genes and their distinct Australian origins. Domain structure analysis revealed substantial similarities in the R-genes between wild Australian limes and cultivated citrus. Investigation of chromosomal sites underlying Australian specific R genes revealed diversifying selection signatures on several chromosomal regions. The findings in this study will aid in the development of tools for genome-assisted breeding for HLB-resistant varieties.
