FDA Sets Risk Level, as Juice Drinks Recall is Updated

In an update issued on Tuesday, the FDA classed the recalls as Class II, which is when the "use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

The industry is innovating to create new products to meet consumer demand and increase growth. Leading the pack in the functional foods and beverages category is dairy, followed by bakery products and then cereals, according to Grand View Research. Furthermore, the most sought-after functional ingredients in the food and beverage category are omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics.

Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey said an E. coli outbreak linked to its biggest restaurant customer, McDonald’s, isn’t likely to hurt the beverage company’s sales at this stage.

With the industry’s problems exacerbated by Hurricane Milton, Florida citrus growers are turning to state and federal lawmakers for help.

Florida Citrus Commission Chairman Steve Johnson said Wednesday he’s met with farmers from North Carolina and Georgia, who sustained damage in last month’s Hurricane Helene, to jointly pressure Congress to pass agricultural disaster assistance.

“I think this is the perfect time to get that passed and kind of get everybody on the same page,” Johnson said during a Citrus Commission meeting.

According to Sérgio Negrão, CEO and co-founder of the exporter Jagrao in Brazil, they are very relieved to finally have received the much-needed rain. "Thank God, the rains have returned to Brazil and the State of São Paulo. The limes need 15 days of rain."

Among commercial juices, the NFC category generally showed the highest content of folates, K, Mg, and Fe, whereas FC juices showed the highest contents of Ca, Mn, and Zn.
